I Lost A week of My Life…

Whew! I lost a week of my life from a nasty stomach virus. Thank goodness it wasn’t COVID, but I’m not sure if it wasn’t just as bad. My faithful and loving husband had to be my nursemaid for several days, as I could not even function to remember to take some aspirin. After a few days of high fevers and everything going out and nothing going in my stomach, I became severely dehydrated and ended up at the ER for fluids and potassium. Never much thought about how many mg of potassium a person needs until I clearly didn’t didn’t have enough. Yep, good times. Poor Darrin had my chores, his chores, the kids, the dogs, the barn and animals, yard work AND had to keep me alive! I’m sure he would agree that using his vacation days to watch over me was much better than using them to have a real vacation :)

Anyway, I’m back at it, outside sweatin’ with the oldies (I think that’s a old Richard Simmons reference, remember him?). Before the “week of doom”, we began landscaping the front of our house. We tilled up the grass, dug trenches for drainage, added fill dirt to raise parts of the area, laid weed block and stepping stones then filled with river rock and rubber mulch, along with a ton of new plants and a Japanese Maple tree. We just to have finish the edges with larger rock to tidy it up. I’ll be glad when that project is done. As with most projects, it took twice as much time and money than we anticipated.

First jobs: Today I dropped off our youngest, Alexi at Chick-fil-a to start her first job. I hope she gains some good experience and makes some friends along the way. I hope she learns how to wipe off a counter after making a mess, and maybe close the refrigerator door. Mostly, I hope she gains a sense of pride in a job well done, even when that job is hard or tedious. That trait seems to be hard to come by these days. It is true that when you serve others, you also get fulfillment and enjoyment, so I hope Alexi enjoys saying the words “My Pleasure” about 999 times a day. Who knows, maybe she’ll even say it at home.

My first job was at Krystal’s. I may or may not have told them I was one year older than my real age so they would hire me at 15 back then <wink>. I was a go-getter at 15 and would do whatever it took to earn my own money. Ever since, if I wanted something bad enough, I always worked to get it. Now, Darrin and I are working so hard to get this farm in order. We want it to be a place of beauty and peace , while being a productive and educational part of the community. It would be so cool if we could have a little farm store on-site one day and maybe do some educational tours for younger kids!

Quick update on the geese: The goslings have been named Adaline and Augustus and have joined the rest of the population in the barnyard. They still hang out with April, the duck since they were all raised together. The geese are in the awkward teenaged stage, where they are losing their down but haven’t gotten real feathers in yet. I’m so anxious to see those beautiful, long curly feathers grow out! I’ll post pictures of them soon on the Facebook page, but in the meantime, the picture here is what they should grow up to look like.

Here’s an awesome indulgence: Darrin discovered these delicious Magnum ice cream bars while traveling. Once he got home, he immediately bought some for the family and we are hooked! So creamy and yummy for an occasional “cheat” treat!

Until next time,

Farm On!
